General Information the Goldfields Region
The discovery of gold in the 1850’s set in train events that would change Australian history forever and build the nation we have today. Ballarat and the surrounding districts are as relevant today with tourist today as they were over 150 years ago with those who sought their fortune on the Goldfields. Apart from major attractions of Sovereign Hill and the Eureka Stockade, the region boasts great scenery and attractions in many towns of Marlborough, Castlemaine and Clunes.
The name Goldfields gives us a good hint as to what went on here and there are still goldmines operating in the region.
Fortunately the evidence of the gold rush and the excitement is still alive in places such as Sovereign Hill.
Often quoted as the birthplace of Australia, unfortunately very few people understand the significance of what happened here about 150 years ago.
The Eureka Centre in Ballarat tells the story of what happened and its reprocussions
